Program Overview:

The Energy Bar Association's Midwest Chapter is co-sponsoring a Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) webinar series on Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) that will consist of three 2.5 hour virtual seminars that will be offered in January and February. This webinar series is sequential and participants should view them in the order presented. Registration includes all three webinars in the Distributed Energy Resources series, along with appropriate course materials. The list of dates is below and registration is on the next page.

Enerdynamics will adapt and update existing live Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) seminars (developed and customized for MISO) and then present them virtually for various stakeholder groups.

Overall Learning Objectives:

Participants will develop knowledge of how DERs operate and how DERs interact with the grid and with electricity markets. This knowledge will enable them to effectively participate in discussions on integrating DERs into the bulk electric system.

Session 1: Distributed Energy Resources Basics (2.5 hours)

This is an introductory level session with limited discussion. Intended for audiences who are learning the fundamentals, the session will focus on participants becoming familiar with the language of DER's, the types of DER's and potential growth DER's

  1. Introduction to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) [30 minutes]
    1. Definition of DERs
    2. Utility-scale versus retail-scale DERs
    3. The three categories of DERs
    4. Inverter-based versus synchronous DERs
    5. Aggregated DERs and microgrids
    6. Why DERs matter to the bulk power system
    7. Areas of impacts on bulk power system markets and operations
  2. DER Technologies [ 1 hour and 15 minutes]
    1. Defining technical characteristics (dispatchability, variability, predictability, ramp rates, interconnection issues)

Session 2: Operational Impacts of DERs (2.5 hours)

This session assumes participants are already familiar with the basic fundamentals of DERs covered in Session 1. This session will focus on the impacts on system design and operations when significant DER's are interconnected with the electrical grid. This session will focus on DERs impacts on system design and operations. Topics include frequency regulation, voltage management, system protection, situational awareness, and forecasting. Since the way DERs are integrated on the distribution grid we will have significant impacts on the bulk electric system, both the distribution and bulk electric system grids will be covered.

Session 3: Integrating DERs into Markets (2.5 hours)

This session assume participants are already familiar with the basic fundamentals of DERs covered in Session 1. This session will focus the potential for DERs to participate in current wholesale markets and will also consider the potential future structure of both distributed and wholesale markets. Topics include services DERs have the technical capability of providing, structures for DER participations, current FERC rules, how DERs currently participate in ISO markets, how DERS impacts markets, and issues associated with DERs participation in ISO markets. We will then explore how DER markets may evolve and consider what needs to be done today to prepare for more extensive markets in the future.

    1. Markets as tool for meeting bulk power system needs

Refunds will be given to registrants who submit written cancellation to the address shown on the registration form three days before the scheduled program, less a $50 administrative fee. The cancellation policy also applies to registration forms that are received and accepted after the deadline date. If a cancellation is requested after the deadline and accepted, there will be a $100 administrative fee. Substitutions are acceptable anytime  (non-members substituting for members will be charged the difference between the member and non-member fees). Please note that regardless of the date the cancellation notice is received, no refunds will be processed until after the program. Confirmations will be sent to registrants via email if an address is provided.
