In 2023\, mergers and acquisitions in the Permian Basin surpassed $100 million\, marking the highest transaction activity since 2019\, and both the Permian and Eagle Ford regions achieved record gas production levels. However\, negative spot prices have underscored the urgent need for increased takeaway capacity. Several pipeline projects are in progress to better connect these basins to industrial centers and export facilities. The EIA forecasts North American LNG export capacity to double by 2027\, with a significant portion of this capacity situated along the Gulf Coast. Positive factors include the progress of the “Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024\,” while challenges include the Administration’s appeal against a ruling that halts its temporary moratorium on new LNG export licenses and increased international attention on lifecycle GHG emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\nJason BennettPartner and Department Chair – Global ProjectsBaker Botts\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan KidwellPartnerKirkland & Ellis\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorge LevySenior Business AnalystKinder Morgan\, Inc.\n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam GarnerCo-Chair – Global Energy & Natural Resources Practices GroupGreenberg Traurig\n\n\n\n\n\n4:45 – 5:00 PM: Closing Remarks \n\n\n\n\nSponsor the event!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n Texas gold sponsorsTexas bronze sponsors (2) \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nRegister Now!\n\n\n\n\nRegistration TypeAdvanced Registration (Through Oct. 16)Late RegistrationStudentMember$345$395$25NonMember$450$585$50\n\n\n\nCLE:This program is eligible for 5 hours of CLE credit in 60-minute states and 6 hours of CLE credit in 50-minute states. SUMMARY:The Symbiotic Relationship Between AI and the Utility Industry
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n\n\n\n\nPlease join the In-House Counsel Coalition and the Energy Professionals Council for this virtual energizer. \n\n\n\nWe’re diving into the fascinating world of AI and its growing role in natural gas pipelines and electric utilities. AI isn’t just causing a big\, unexpected spike in the use of natural gas and electricity; it’s also changing the way pipelines and power lines operate and how we\, as customers\, interact with them. This rapid evolution brings up a lot of questions\, like how we should build new assets\, how scheduling needs to change\, and the ethical issues around using AI. \n\n\n\nAs AI becomes more embedded in the electric and natural gas industries\, it’s clear we all need to adapt our practices and viewpoints. In our upcoming program\, we’ll tackle the challenges of this ever-changing utility landscape and see how AI tools are being developed to meet these demands. We’ll look at these challenges from the perspectives of natural gas and electric industry representatives as well as an AI developer and service provider and discuss why AI will be crucial for meeting the power needs of AI data centers. Join us as we navigate this exciting journey\, balancing innovation with responsible practices. Let’s shape a smarter\, more resilient future together. \n\n\n\n\n\nRanti OkunorenPrincipal Corporate Counsel – Global Lead Retail\, Consumer Goods\, Gaming and Energy IndustryMicrosoft \n\n\n\n\n\nDonald Spankuch Vice President\, Gas & Power OperationsBP\n\n\n\n\n\nMark WyattExecutive Director – Digital Solution DeliveryMISO\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now!\n\n\n\n\n\nSee Speaker Bios\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Types Member  Nonmember Registration$40$60Student RegistrationFree$10Please note there is no CLE for this event.

SUMMARY:Energy Law Academy Course 102: An Introduction to Electricity and Electric Rate Regulation
DESCRIPTION:The goal of Course 102 is to provide an overview of electric regulation at the federal and state levels. The course begins with a brief overview of how electricity is generated\, transmitted\, and delivered to customers\, and covers key legal milestones in electric regulation since commercial electric service began in the 1870s. \n\n\n\nThe course explains how state and federal jurisdiction over different segments of the industry emerged under the Federal Power Act of 1935 and later legislation\, including the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 and the Energy Policy Acts of 1992 and 2005. We will review key regulatory concepts underlying all forms of regulation\, from traditional cost-of-service regulation to the parameters for setting market-based rates. \n\n\n\nThe course will also cover alternative regulatory regimes\, development of competitive wholesale and retail electric markets\, enforcement of the prohibition against market manipulation\, the role of Regional Transmission Organizations\, and the reliability regime administered by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.View Speaker Bios Here \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT. SUMMARY:Powerless: Legal Dimensions of the People’s Struggle for Energy
DESCRIPTION:This Virtual Energizer event\, hosted by the Energy Bar Association’s Energy Insecurity Initiative (EII)\, features Dr. Diana Hernández—renowned sociologist\, Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health\, and a founding member of the  Energy Bar Association’s Energy Insecurity Initiative.  \n\n\n\nDrawing from her new book\, Powerless: The People’s Struggle for Energy\, Dr. Hernández will present emerging research and conceptual insights on energy insecurity—the inability to adequately meet household energy needs.  \n\n\n\nGrounded in over a decade of pathbreaking empirical research\, this event  will explore the lived experiences of households facing utility shutoffs\, rising energy costs\, and the challenges of navigating the legal and regulatory systems that govern access to essential utility services.  \n\n\n\nThis event\, moderated by Louis Legault\, will also offer EBA members a foundational understanding of energy insecurity\, describing its relevance to consumer protection\, utility regulation\, and equity\, and sharing recommendations for how existing structures might evolve to better support low-income ratepayers in a changing climate and rapidly shifting energy landscape. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now!\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Types Member  Nonmember Registration$40$60Student RegistrationFree$10
