On September 12, 2025, former Energy Bar Association President Carmen Gentile passed away at his home in Maine.

Carmen was a founding partner of the law firm Bruder, Gentile & Marcoux, L.L.P. which later merged with Schiff Hardin LLP and ultimately became part of ArentFox Schiff LLP. The firm represented investor-owned electric utilities and gas distribution systems, before FERC.

Carmen was elected President of the Energy Bar Association in 1995. After his term as President, Carmen remained active in the energy community including writing an article for the Energy Law Journal in 2000 and other articles for Public Utilities Fortnightly.

In the Fall of 2007, EBA member Darrell Blakeway interviewed Carmen. He reflected on his 30-plus-year career and leadership in the Energy Bar Association. He discussed strengthening EBA’s professional reputation, expanding regional chapters, building the Energy Law Journal Foundation’s independence, and his views on the evolving energy landscape—including competition, nuclear power, renewables, and integrated energy planning. Shortly after graduating from Harvard College, Carmen joined the U.S. State Department, as a Foreign Service Officer, at the age of 22. He was a vice consul at the U.S. Consulate in Palermo, Italy. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and began his legal career as law clerk for Chief Judge G. Joseph Tauro of the Massachusetts Superior Court and then as Assistant Legal Counsel for Massachusetts Governor Francis Sargent.

Those in the energy bar who worked with Carmen remarked on his kindness and his skill as an energy attorney.

Carmen was an amazing attorney, mentor and friend.  I was privileged and honored to be his associate for 6 years and his partner for a short time.  He had a great sense of humor; he enjoyed a little sarcasm.  Most important, he had a love of the law and a talent with the business of law.  We will miss him.

William D. Booth, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP

Carmen was a dedicated and talented attorney who shared his love for energy law with all those fortunate enough to work with him.  Carmen believed in investing in people, not just work, and many of us are indebted to him for the opportunities and guidance he provided.  I had the privilege of working with Carmen as an associate for 8 years, and while his knowledge of the industry was unmatched, I will remember him most for his genuine kindness and sense of humor.  He will be missed.

Linda Kizuka, Constellation Energy

I was fortunate to have Carmen as a mentor during my early years as an energy attorney. He was a brilliant lawyer and I learned a great deal from him.  I carry those lessons with me today.  I will miss his guidance, camaraderie, and the stories he’d tell over a drink (or two).
